ORIGINS OF CAN MARTINOY

The story of Can Martinoy begins in 1950. Ramon Martinoy acquires an elevated plot of land very close to Girona to build the house of his dreams.
Ramon Martinoy was born in Torroella de Montgrí in 1936 in a family of farmers and nurseries He is the sixth of seven siblings.
At 25 years old, and after working in the fields since he was 12, he left his native town and moved with his wife and two children to the county capital, Girona. He soon excels in the design and construction of gardens, parks, and environments, quickly becoming a good name in the city. In a few years he opens a plant nursery and a very successful flower shop, where he begins to work for many of the important families of the city.
In these years of prosperity he begins what would be the project of his life, the construction of a house on top of a stone hill near the River Ter and with privileged views of the old quarter, Sant Félix and the Cathedral.

The house began to be built between 1952 and 1953. At the beginning, the work is very complicated due to the elevated geography of the terrain and the hardness of the stone. A challenge when making the necessary foundations and levels. Ramon, passionate about objects with character and history, wanted to dress up the house with all kinds of antiques. From hand-hewn stones, large reclaimed oak beams (some from the demolition of the old military barracks in the city of Girona) to furniture, lamps and other utensils that he considered to have historical or aesthetic value. In this way, the house was taking on its own style. In 1978, the house received a major extension with the construction of an annex following the original style begun. Little by little, Agustí, his youngest son, takes over the family business and Ramon has more and more time to be at home, continue collecting antiques or devote himself to completing the design of the garden. During all these years the house hosted three generations of the Martinoy family.

In 2017, a new adventure begins by opening a part of the house as tourist accommodation.
In 2023, pushed by the good reception of the guests who have stayed there all this time, the house is completely renovated giving- li with a more current air and respecting the style and essence of Can Martinoy.
Today for today, the house is open in its entirety and you can enjoy its 500 square meters of construction and its 3200 m2 of garden .

And the adventure continues...
Today the illusion continues...
